S E Barrett & Son

A thirty-year-old building firm that had no website at all. Now it has forty-five pages, every one of them pointed at getting the phone to ring.

  • 45 pages — services, areas covered, past jobs and reviews
  • Ranks for the villages and suburbs around Poole, not just "builder Dorset"
  • Loads in under a second on a phone on mobile data
  • Quote form and tap-to-call on every single page

The problem

Thirty years of good work and no way for anyone to find it. The firm ran entirely on word of mouth — which is a lovely problem to have right up until a quiet month, when there is no way to make more work appear.

Anyone who did go looking found nothing. A search for the company name returned a Checkatrade listing and somebody else’s Facebook page.

What I built

A proper site, not a business card. The important decision was to build a page for each service in each area rather than one “Areas we cover” page with a list of towns on it. Somebody searching extension builder Broadstone gets a page about extensions in Broadstone, because that is the page that will actually rank.

The photographs are the other half of it. Builders undersell themselves constantly — the real pictures of finished jobs do more convincing than any paragraph I could write, so the projects section is built around them.

Underneath, every page carries the structured data Google reads to pull the phone number, the areas served and the opening hours straight into search results. There is a script that runs on every build and refuses to publish if a page is missing a title, a description or an image alt attribute.

The result

Forty-five pages, all static HTML, hosted for nothing. It loads in under a second on a phone in a van with two bars of signal — which is where most people will see it.
